Scope and Content |
Small notebook containing minutes of meetings. These include: details of membership and those which attended each meeting, details of the development of "laws of the society" including subscription rates, and details of mineral and book purchases. A proposed merger with the Cuverian Society is also noted. Geological questions discussed and conclusions reached are minuted. These include "Is coal of vegetable origin?", "Is Arthur's Seat of acqueous or volcanic origin?" and "What was the physical cause of the mosaic flood?". Demonstrations included a specimen of Greenockite while several weeks were devoted to undertaking a classification of rocks. Summer exursions are also minuted. Local sites of geological interest were visited including Edinburgh Castle Hill, Cramond Island and Dean Bridge on the Water of Leith. A smaller notebook with membership rolls for 1834-1840 and "The New Code of Laws" is pasted inside the back cover. There is a gap in the minutes between 14 April 1836 and 26 January 1837. |
