Biographical History

Biographical History

James Cossar Ewart (1851-1933) was the regius professor of natural history at the University of Edinburgh from 1882-1927. During this time he corresponded with many academic colleagues, both in this country and abroad, including: the zoologists Sir Arthur Everett Shipley (1861-1927), and Edwin Ray Lankester (1847-1929), the archaeologist Sir William Ridgeway (1853-1926), and the naturalist Theo DA Cockerell (1866-1927). The majority of the letters in this series relate to the experimental hybridisation work he achieved with zebras and horses at a farm in Penicuik, near Edinburgh. The results of these investigations (and many others) were published in his book The Penycuik Experiments, (1899). Professor Ewart crossed different breeds of horse with a Burchell's zebra stallion, and this body of correspondence attests to the great deal of attention this research attracted around the world. The zebra hybrids provided an unusual exhibit at the Royal Agricultural Society's Show in York in 1900.
