Biographical History |
James Cossar Ewart (1851-1933) was the regius professor of natural
history at the University of Edinburgh from
1882-1927. During this time he corresponded with
many academic colleagues, both in this country and abroad, including: the
zoologists Sir Arthur Everett Shipley (1861-1927), and Edwin Ray
Lankester (1847-1929), the archaeologist Sir William Ridgeway
(1853-1926), and the naturalist Theo DA Cockerell
(1866-1927). The majority of the letters in this
series relate to the experimental hybridisation work he achieved with zebras
and horses at a farm in Penicuik, near Edinburgh. The results of these
investigations (and many others) were published in his book
The Penycuik Experiments,
