Biographical History

Biographical History

Robert Jameson was Professor of Natural History at Edinburgh for fifty years. He looked after the University's Natural History Collection and expanded its holdings immensely, and he explored and published in geology, mineralogy, zoology and botany, particulary in Scotland. He also presided over the Wernerian Natural History Society and edited the Edinburgh Philosophical Journal.

Notes consists of:

  • Zoology monograph draft pages, with extracts from other people's articles, such as on Scottish gnawing animals by one Dr Fleming, and Messrs Diard and one Duvaucel's note on swine.
  • Loose papers which begin with 'Order 4 - Ferae', and include writeups on cats, horses, deer, sheep (with a drawing of an animal's head), insecta and arachnida, snakes, dolphins, fish, dogs, mollusca, and birds (grouse, in particular).
  • 3 envelopes containing notes on 'vertebrates', algae, fossil remains, and 'botany and botanical geography'.
