Scope and Content

File contains approximately 220 unbound pages: drafts of chapters and professional communications in mineralogy, one dated 1812, and lectures in such things as 'geognosie', how to distinguish types and classes of fossil deposits, and the necessity of a uniform nomenclature among geographers. There is an extract from Humboldt on general distribution of rock deposits, an 1836 note on igneous rocks, another on Mariotte's Law of the compressibility of elastic fluids, a squib by M. Messer on how rocks influence vine plants (Zeitschrift fur Mineralogie, June 1825 or 1828), and an essay on the connection of geology with agriculture and planting, by a 'Professor Hausmann'. There are doodles and rough diagrams, and occasional plates and drawings, such as a pair of lovely illustrations of how an animal can fossilize in a particular stratum of rock.
