Papers relating to the refusal to reappoint EN Miles Thomas to the position of head of the department of botany at Bedford College, London. The papers consist of:

• printed statement protesting against the injustice done to EN Miles Thomas in the refusal of the University of London to reappoint her to the position of Head of Botany at Bedford College, a position she has held for nearly 9 years at a lower salary than other heads of department in the college (May 1916)
• printed statement outlining the development of the department under the jurisdiction of EN Miles Thomas including results of students, 1912-1916 (1916)
• two copies of a statement in favour of EN Miles Thomas which outlines her credentials and achievements which was signed by Frederick Ernest Weiss, Edward Albert Sharpey Schäfer and Sydney Howard Vines (1916)
• note to the Senate of the University of London from Frederick Orpen Bower refusing to help them find a replacement for EN Miles Thomas due to the unsatisfactory circumstances surrounding the vacancy (08 July 1916)
• letter to Frederick Orpen Bower from EN Miles Thomas enclosing a printed statement of London botanists protesting against the decision to refuse to reappoint her. She asks Bower if he would sign the paper and strengthen her position. Note in Bower's hand states that he cannot sign as he does not believe it is a matter for outsiders. Another note further outlines his position and states that he thinks this might harm rather than help her cause (16 July 1916)
• letter to Frederick Orpen Bower from Vernon Herbert Blackman informing Bower that the London Botanists who signed the protest against the refusal to reappoint EN Miles Thomas do not think that other botanists should be discouraged from applying for the position or supporting those applying for the position (18 July 1916)
• notice that the Senate of the University of London has appointed a committee to consider and report on the "non-reappointment" of EN Miles Thomas (19 July 1916)
• letter to the Senate of the University of London from TL Prankerd and AJ Davey in which they reiterate their refusal to work unless EN Miles Thomas is reappointed (22 July 1916)
