Scope and Content |
Letter to Frederick Orpen Bower from Henry Horatio Dixon in which he expresses his surprise at the outcome of the process to select a new Regius Professor of Botany in the University of Edinburgh and Regius Keeper of the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens. He states that he thought someone of solid achievement or who showed good promise would be appointed. He remarks that Edinburgh has many opportunities for research and that he hopes its resources will not be squandered. He thanks Bower for his help and support. He agrees with Bower that many of the happenings in Ireland are "scenic" but states that "enough live in the scenery and, when it goes up in smoke, our livelihood goes with it". He states that he believes that politicians are impressed only by stage effects and that the decent majority of the population are forgotten. He describes raids on barracks and large buildings in Dublin every night "so that the darkness resounds with revolver and rifle shots and machine-gun fire" |
