Scope and Content |
Letter to Frederick Orpen Bower from William Henry Lang thanking him for sending his address to the Edinburgh Royal Society which he read with great interest. He agrees with Bower's position on the appointment of Agnes Arber as President of Section K of the British Association for the Advancement of Science and informs Bower that he and Frederick Ernest Weiss had already critically discussed it. They too believe it would be a fatal selection for Edinburgh but appreciate the work of Agnes Arber. He tells Bower that they had discussed suggesting some of the young botanists who had not already been President for the post, such as Vernon Herbert Blackman, Sir Arthur George Tansley and Richard Henry Yapp. They had also discussed Helen Gwynne-Vaughan but decided that it would not be a good idea to have two women presidents in a row. He states that the matter needs great tact and agrees with Bower that younger botanists should be passed over for a more senior person so that Agnes Arber does not feel slighted and states that his preference would be for Dukinfield Henry Scott. |
