Biographical History

This series of photographs were taken 2 years after the completion of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition. They were taken somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea between the 07 September 1906 and 09 September 1906. It has not been possible to identify which ship or scientific expedition they depict, or any of the people portrayed.

The photographs depict men who were involved with the expedition either posing or relaxing on the deck of the ship, meteorological balloons being launched into the air from a winch and view of the land from the sea.

  • a variety of men on the deck of a ship (7 stereo glass-plate negatives)
  • the shore taken from a ship (2 stereo glass-plate negatives)
  • meteorological instruments, particularly balloons, being operated (7 stereo glass-plate negatives)
