After developing his photographs, William Speirs Bruce collected together those of a similar theme. This series consists of photographs of ice taken during the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, and one from a later trip to Switzerland. About half of the series depicts icebergs and pack ice photographed from the deck of the SY Scotia while under way. The remainder of the series depicts the SY Scotia beset in the ice on the frozen Weddell Sea off Coatsland. The expedition spent 6 days here before managing to liberate the ship. This was the most southern latitude achieved and Coatsland, a new discovery, was named in honour of the Coats brothers of Paisley (Scotland) who had provided a large percentage of the funding for the expedition. |
