In 1962, Robert Allan Smith left his post of professor of physics at Sheffield University to become professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the first director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Centre of Materials Science and Engineering. He returned to Great Britain in 1968 to take up the post of Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University. His duties included the supervision and approval of some of the theses produced by undergraduates and postgraduate research students at all three institutions.
